Police say the Chief Imam was attacked and killed by a mob who accused him of causing a villager’s death in Tsaragi, Kwara State

The Kwara State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the brutal killing of the Chief Imam of Sokunkpan community in Tsaragi, Edu Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said in a statement on Thursday that the cleric, Alhaji Abdullahi Audu, was attacked and killed by an angry mob after being accused of involvement in the death of a villager, Ibrahim Gana.

According to the police, the incident happened on November 4, 2025, around 9:30 p.m. Gana, aged 25, had been sick and on admission at a hospital before he died. His brothers, Mohammed Shaba and Mahmud Gana, reportedly blamed the imam for his death and led others to attack him.

The mob allegedly used dangerous weapons during the assault, which resulted in the imam’s death.

Police said four suspects had been arrested as investigations continue.

Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, described the act as “barbaric and criminal,” warning residents against jungle justice. He urged the public to always report suspicious activities to security agencies rather than taking laws into their own hands.
