KSrelief’s programme fully covers cochlear implants, surgery, therapy, and rehabilitation, giving children with profound hearing loss the chance to hear and communicate for the first time.

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSRelief) has started a major cochlear implant and hearing-rehabilitation programme in Nigeria. The initiative provides life-changing surgeries for children with severe hearing loss, with each treatment package valued between ₦40 million and ₦60 million, according to medical officials and programme coordinators.

The intervention, rolled out in collaboration with Nigerian health authorities, targets 30 paediatric cochlear implant surgeries, forming one of the largest specialised humanitarian health projects of its kind in the country. The programme includes screening, surgery, device activation, auditory training and extended speech therapy.

The initiative was formally announced in Abuja by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Saudi Embassy, Saad bin Fahd Al-Marri, who said the project reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening healthcare for vulnerable populations.

“This programme reflects the Kingdom’s dedication to supporting vulnerable communities and strengthening health systems in friendly nations. Through KSrelief, we are committed to delivering tangible solutions that restore hope and transform lives,” Al-Marri said.

Officials said the effort aligns with Saudi Arabia’s global health-support strategy under the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Peace Magazine gathered that the Abuja phase is part of a wider Saudi medical mission that includes upcoming outreach in other Nigerian states, with additional cases already being screened for the next round of surgeries. Health officials confirmed that the programme is expected to expand if outcomes from the current cohort remain successful.

At the National Hospital in Abuja, KSrelief medical teams and hospital specialists conducted the first activation, known as the “switch-on” which allows a child to hear sound for the very first time after surgery.

The Saudi Embassy’s Press Attaché Mohammed Alsahabi, explained the moment to journalists:

“Today we are witnessing the ‘switch on’. Once the device placed in the child’s head is activated, the child will hear sound for the first time. This is the first exercise of the programme,” he said.

Hospital sources estimate that the full value of the implant, surgery, post-operative care and rehabilitation ranges between ₦40 million and ₦60 million per child, fully covered by KSrelief.

Barrister Oluchi Olanipekun, whose five-year-old daughter Feyi received the implant, recounted the emotional toll of raising a child unable to hear:

“When this opportunity came, it was a chance to give her a better life to communicate, speak and interact,” she said.

“It was heartbreaking when she couldn’t hear and her siblings could. We kept going from one audiology test to another. Raising a child who cannot hear has not been easy.”

Her daughter underwent surgery the previous day and had her device activated during the visit.

Asked about the cost, she replied:

“We’re not paying anything. It is totally free.”

She praised the Saudi humanitarian initiative:

“God bless them. They have brought relief and comfort to so many families dealing with the emotional torture of a child that cannot hear.”

Another parent, Mr. Onokoya Ismail, who travelled with his four-year-old daughter Nadia from Lagos, said support had been difficult to find until KSrelief stepped in.

“Because of Saudi Arabia, my child can now hear sounds. We give thanks to them. I had written to government for support with no success. KSrelief gave Nigerians this opportunity, and we appreciate them.”

KSrelief has expanded specialised medical interventions across West and Central Africa in recent years, including cardiac surgeries, fistula repair missions, eye-care programmes, and outreach for crisis-affected communities.

The cochlear implant rollout, officials said, reinforces the Kingdom’s long-term strategy to support critical health services in underserved areas, with Nigeria becoming a key hub for regional medical relief.

The cochlea is a tiny, spiral organ in the inner ear that turns sound vibrations into electrical signals the brain can understand, making hearing possible. When it becomes damaged from birth conditions, infections, or other causes, it can lead to severe hearing loss. In such cases, a cochlear implant—an electronic device that bypasses the damaged cochlea and stimulates the auditory nerve—can help restore the ability to perceive sound.
