UK Midwife Hauwa Hamza Honoured at British Muslim Health Awards

Northampton-based midwife wins Muslim Midwife of the Year for service, innovation, and community impact

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

A midwife working with University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) United Kingdom (UK), Hauwa Hamza, has been named Midwife of the Year at the inaugural British Muslim Health Awards 2025, marking a major recognition of her contribution to healthcare and community service.

Hauwa, who trained and works at Northampton General Hospital, received the award at a ceremony held in Birmingham in December. The event was organised by the British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA) to celebrate excellence among Muslim health professionals in the United Kingdom.

For the past 16 months, Hauwa has worked in UHN’s One Digital and Data team as a Digital Clinical Facilitator, supporting efforts to modernise and improve midwifery information systems. Her role focuses on ensuring that digital tools used by frontline staff are practical, effective, and patient-focused.

After receiving the award, Hauwa said she was surprised by the honour, noting that many other nominees had done outstanding work. She described the recognition as encouraging and said it helped highlight the importance of digital transformation within midwifery services.

Her work bridges the gap between clinical midwifery teams and digital specialists, particularly in the rollout of the Electronic Patient Record system at Northampton General Hospital. This has helped improve patient care and streamline clinical processes.

Beyond her work in the UK, Hauwa has also supported maternal healthcare in Nigeria. Since 2014, she and her sisters have provided thousands of birthing packs to families, helping women achieve safer home births through access to basic medical supplies.

UHN’s Group Chief Clinical Information Officer, Ramandeep Kaur, described the award as a recognition of Hauwa’s compassion, professionalism, and dedication to service. She said Hauwa’s work reflects the values of integrity, humility, and community care that the awards seek to promote.

The British Muslim Health Awards were established to recognise Muslim professionals whose work strengthens healthcare and inspires others. Organisers said Hauwa’s achievement highlights the positive impact Muslim health workers continue to make across the UK and beyond.
