Supreme Court Justice Highlights Social Media’s Impact on Moral Judgments at UNIFEMGA’s 18th Annual Ramadan Lecture

The Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA), Abuja Chapter, held its 18th Annual Ramadan Lecture and Iftar on March 12, 2025, at the Nigerian Society of Engineers’ Auditorium, Abuja. The event, which drew distinguished personalities, scholars, and members of the Muslim community, focused on the theme “Sustaining Faith in a Fast-Changing World: Islam and the Challenges of Modernity.”

In his welcome address, Alhaji Ismaila Okunlola, Ameer of UNIFEMGA Abuja Chapter, expressed gratitude to attendees and emphasized the importance of upholding Islamic principles in the face of modern challenges. “Modernity has introduced complexities that sometimes trivialize major sins,” he said. “As Muslims, we must remain steadfast, ensuring that our faith is not compromised.”

Chairman of the occasion, Justice Habeeb Wale Abiru, Justice of the Supreme Court, commended UNIFEMGA for its consistency in organizing the annual event. He noted, “The world today presents an ever-evolving moral landscape where social media often dictates what is right and wrong. We must be deliberate in ensuring that Islamic values remain at the core of our decision-making and interactions.”

The lecture was delivered by Dr. Musa Olaofe, Chief Imam of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society Mosque, Maitama, Abuja, who addressed the intricate balance between faith and modernity.

“The rapid changes in technology and global affairs offer both opportunities and challenges for Muslims,” Dr. Olaofe stated. “While we embrace advancements, we must ensure they align with our Islamic values.” He highlighted secularism, globalization, and individualism as major challenges threatening spiritual commitment, urging Muslims to remain conscious of their religious identity.

Citing Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), he reminded attendees of Islam’s encouragement toward knowledge-seeking. “The Qur’an teaches us that Allah elevates those who seek knowledge. This means we must engage critically with modern realities through Islamic scholarship to remain relevant and grounded.”

Dr Olaofe also emphasized the role of Ijtihad (independent reasoning) in adapting Islamic teachings to contemporary realities, adding, “Islam is a faith of knowledge, and our scholars must actively engage with emerging issues like artificial intelligence and biotechnology while ensuring that ethical considerations remain paramount.”

On the role of social media and globalization, he said, “The digital age, while a great tool for education and outreach, has also led to an identity crisis for many young Muslims. Instead of abandoning these platforms, we must harness them for Da’wah and education.” He cited platforms like Muslim Pro and Bayyinah TV as positive examples of Islamic digital engagement.

He concluded by urging Muslim families to prioritize religious education alongside conventional knowledge. “When faith is properly nurtured, it can withstand the pressures of modernity without losing its essence.”

Speaking at the event, Hajiya Rahmat Sanni, commended the organizers and encouraged parents and attendees to implement the lessons from the lecture. “This gathering is a call to action for all of us,” she said. “As parents and guardians, we must ensure that the knowledge acquired here today is reflected in our daily lives and passed down to our children.”

Alhaji Abdulrahman Balogun also reflected on the erosion of respect for elders in modern society, urging the younger generation to uphold Islamic values of respect and discipline. “The world is changing fast, but core values like respect and discipline should never be compromised,” he remarked.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Alhaji Abdul Ghaniyy Oladokun, who appreciated the speakers and attendees, emphasizing the significance of continuous engagement in faith-based discussions.

The event was graced by several notable figures, including Justice Abdullahi Al-Illory, Justice Ajoke Adepoju (Federal Capital Territory High Court.) Dr Maina Yaumi, Executive Secretary, Borno State Education Trust Fund. The gathering ended with communal Iftar and Maghrib prayers, as attendees came together to break their fast before departure.
