The story of the first shedding of human blood is one of the haunting passages in the Qur’an. Long before civilisations formed, two sons of Adam found themselves entangled in jealousy, anger and tragic consequence. In just a few verses, Allah unveils how envy can twist the heart, the Qur’an draws our attention not only to the tragedy between two brothers, but to the unexpected creature Allah chose to teach humanity its first lesson in dignity after death: the raven.

The Qur’an recounts the moment with striking clarity: “So the soul of the one encouraged him to kill his brother, and he murdered him and became one of the losers.” (Qur’an 5:30). Qābīl stood over the lifeless body of his brother, frozen not only by guilt but also by ignorance. For although he had taken a life, he did not know what to do with the remains. It was at that moment that Allah sent a raven, scratching the soil, teaching him what he did not know. “Then Allah sent a raven scratching the ground to show him how to bury the corpse of his brother. He said, ‘Woe to me! Am I unable to be like this raven, and conceal the body of my brother?’” (Qur’an 5:31).

The scholars mention that this was the first burial on earth, and that the raven became the teacher for the son of Adam who could not find a way to cover his sin. Ibn Kathir narrates from early authorities that the raven dug with its beak and claws, shaping a small trench and covering another dead raven, demonstrating the natural instinct Allah had placed within His creatures. In that moment, Qabil realized that even a bird obeyed God better than he had.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) referenced this scene in a hadith recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. He said: “No soul is killed unjustly except that the first son of Adam bears a portion of that burden, for he was the first to establish the practice of killing.”

This is not a punishment laid upon him for others’ sins, but a moral legacy: he opened a door that humanity has continued to walk through with devastating consequence. What makes the story compelling is not merely the murder, but the role of the raven. Allah chose it as the first teacher of burial rites.

The resurrection of this ancient story in our own time carries its own weight. We live in an age now where violence, envy and rivalry still stalk the human heart. Even now the world around us, the creation of Allah continues to whisper lessons of compassion. A bird taught Qabil how to honour the dead. Perhaps if we listened, Allah’s creation would still teach us how to honour the living.
