Makkah Forum Highlights Role of Islamic Charities in Serving Pilgrims

Meeting focuses on how nonprofit Islamic groups are helping improve Hajj and Umrah services

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

A forum in Makkah has drawn attention to the growing role of Islamic charitable and nonprofit organizations in supporting pilgrims during Hajj and Umrah, as leaders and stakeholders met to discuss ways to improve services for the guests of Allah.

The first Non-Profit Sector Forum in Service of Pilgrims was opened at the Makkah Chamber of Commerce by the Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, with attendance from government officials, nonprofit groups, private sector representatives, and donors.

In his address, Al-Rabiah said the nonprofit sector has become a key part of pilgrim services, noting that the number of associations involved in Hajj and Umrah support has increased fifty times over the past five years.

He explained that the ministry is working to strengthen the sector through a clear plan aimed at moving from short-term support to long-term, sustainable service, guided by a nonprofit strategy for the period 2026 to 2030.

According to the minister, the goal is to expand Islamic charitable work, improve efficiency, and enhance the overall experience of pilgrims and Umrah performers, in line with the Islamic values of service, mercy, and hospitality.

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah currently supervises over 100 nonprofit associations that serve pilgrims through partnerships, innovative initiatives, and cooperation between government, private, and charitable sectors.

Panel discussions at the forum highlighted the nonprofit sector as an active partner in Hajj and Umrah services, with speakers calling for greater diversity, stronger cooperation, and a deeper role in the integrated service system.

The forum also featured sessions on sustainability, funding, endowments, and social responsibility, alongside workshops, exhibitions, and partnership agreements, all aimed at strengthening Islamic charity work and improving services for pilgrims visiting the Two Holy Mosques.
