360 Abductees Freed from Boko Haram Hideout in Borno

Victims mostly from a Muslim community near the Cameroon border, regained freedom after months in captivity

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

Hundreds of people abducted by Boko Haram fighters in Borno State have regained their freedom after spending months in captivity at a remote mountain hideout.

The freed captives were among residents of Ngoshe, a predominantly Muslim community near the Cameroon border, who were kidnapped during an attack in March while many were reportedly breaking their Ramadan fast.

Nigerian military authorities said at least 360 hostages were rescued during a major intelligence-led operation targeting a Boko Haram stronghold in the Mandara Mountains. The military described the mission as one of its most significant hostage rescue operations in the North-East.

According to military officials, troops launched a surprise assault under the cover of darkness, forcing some insurgents to flee while others surrendered. The hostages were subsequently rescued and taken for medical attention.

However, the Borno South Youth Initiative disputed the military’s account, claiming it played a key role in negotiating the captives’ unconditional release. The group also put the number of freed hostages at 416.

Authorities confirmed that the rescued victims are receiving medical care, although two infants reportedly died from exhaustion due to the harsh conditions and prolonged period of captivity.

Officials also said efforts are ongoing to locate and return other captives believed to have escaped into neighbouring Cameroon during the crisis.

The incident highlights the continued threat posed by Boko Haram and other armed groups, which have increasingly relied on kidnappings for ransom despite years of military operations against them.
