The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria has raised fresh alarm over the worsening security situation in the country, urging the Federal Government to take urgent and concrete action against killings, kidnappings, banditry, and terrorism.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Secretary-General, Nafiu Baba Ahmad, the council said the level of insecurity nationwide has become deeply disturbing and unacceptable.

It noted that recent attacks and mass abductions across states such as Borno, Oyo, Niger, and Zamfara show how vulnerable many communities have become. The council also referenced the kidnapping of a retired army general and his wife in Katsina as part of the growing crisis.

According to the group, insecurity incidents are often underreported, but available figures from security trackers and rights organisations suggest that thousands of Nigerians have been affected in recent months. It claimed that more than 1,000 people were abducted in Northern Nigeria during the first quarter of 2026 alone.

The council said the human cost of the crisis is enormous, stressing that behind every statistic is a family suffering loss, trauma, or displacement.

It criticised what it described as repeated government responses that rely on statements, promises, condolences, and committees without producing meaningful results.

“Nigerians are tired of speeches, promises, condolences, committees and official rhetoric not backed by action,” the statement said, adding that citizens now expect measurable results in tackling insecurity.

The council stressed that security remains the primary constitutional duty of government and said leaders must demonstrate stronger commitment and effectiveness in addressing the crisis.

While acknowledging the efforts and sacrifices of security personnel, it clarified that its criticism was directed at leadership and policy implementation, not frontline officers who continue to risk their lives.

It also called for greater transparency in how security budgets are managed, asking authorities to account for funds allocated to defence, intelligence, and military operations.

The group argued that accountability and proper use of resources are necessary to restore public confidence in government efforts.

The council further urged the adoption of stronger and more practical strategies, including improved intelligence gathering, inter-agency cooperation, technology deployment, and community-based security systems.

It warned that Nigeria cannot continue to operate under the current security conditions, insisting that citizens must be able to farm, travel, and live without fear of attack.

“The time for excuses has passed. The time for decisive leadership is now,” the council added.
