Lessons from Badr – Ramadan Digest (Episode 13)

The Battle of Badr, fought on the 17th of Ramadan in the second year after Hijrah (624 CE), was a moment of truth for the early Muslims. Outnumbered and poorly equipped, the believers faced an army three times their size. Yet, against all odds, they emerged victorious, a victory that was not measured by strength or numbers but by faith in Allah. Prior to this battle, Muslims faced persecution in Mecca, leading to their migration to Medina in 622 CE, known as Hijra. Tensions with the Quraysh tribe persisted, culminating in the Battle of Badr. The Muslim forces confronted a Quraysh army of about a thousand soldiers. Despite being outnumbered, the Muslims achieved a decisive victory.

Health Tip

Use plenty of ugwu leaves (Fluted Pumpkin) for soups or stews to replenish nutrients and aid digestion for iftar, or prepare a light stir-fry with eggs and ugwu.

Ugu leaves are abundant in vitamins A, C, and K, essential for immune function, vision, and blood clotting. The leaves are a good source of iron, which can help prevent anemia and boost energy levels during fasting.

Today’s Challenge:

Drawing inspiration from the Battle of Badr, take time today to reflect on personal challenges you’ve faced or are currently facing. Consider the following steps: Turn to the Qur’an, Hadith, or trusted mentors for advice and support. Place your reliance on Allah, knowing that with hardship comes ease.

Qur’an Verse of the Day

“Allah had already given you victory at Badr when you were few in number. So fear Allah; perhaps you will be grateful.” (Surah Al-Imran 3:123)

Hadiths

“If you all depend on Allah with due reliance, He would certainly give you provision as He supplies provision to birds who get up hungry in the morning and return with full bellies at dusk.” (Tirmidhi 2344)

“The believers, in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion, are like one body; when any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.” (Bukhari 6011)
