Türkiye Appoints Mehmet Poroy as New Ambassador to Nigeria

Seasoned diplomat steps into Abuja post as Türkiye strengthens its global Islamic diplomacy and African ties under President Erdoğan.

By Abdullahi Yusuf

The Republic of Türkiye has officially appointed Ambassador Mehmet Poroy as its new envoy to Nigeria, marking the beginning of a fresh diplomatic chapter between the two nations. He presented a copy of his letter of credence to Ambassador Wahab A. Akande, Chief of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on May 2, 2025, in Abuja.

Ambassador Poroy replaces Hidayet Bayraktar, who served from 2021 to 2025 and played a pivotal role in deepening Türkiye–Nigeria relations across trade, defence, and cultural diplomacy. The new appointment was part of a broader diplomatic reshuffle approved by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and published in Türkiye’s Official Gazette on April 10.

Born on January 11, 1967, Mehmet Poroy is a seasoned diplomat with over three decades of experience in foreign affairs. He studied International Relations at Ankara University’s Faculty of Political Sciences and joined the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1990. His distinguished career includes serving as Head of the Maritime Department (2007–2008), Consul General in Brussels (2008–2012), Deputy Director General of Maritime, Aviation and Borders (2012–2015), and Ambassador to Algeria (2015–2019).

Since 2020, he has worked as an advisor to the Turkish Group of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Fluent in English and French, Poroy brings a wealth of diplomatic experience to his new role in Nigeria. He is married.

His appointment reflects Türkiye’s wider diplomatic momentum under President Erdoğan, whose leadership has positioned the nation as a central player in the Muslim world. Türkiye has become an assertive advocate for Muslim causes globally, from its unwavering support for Palestine to its expanding humanitarian and strategic engagement across Africa.

As one of the leading voices in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Türkiye continues to shape a foreign policy anchored in Islamic identity and solidarity. This ideological clarity, coupled with growing economic influence, has redefined its role among Muslim-majority nations, a legacy likely to influence Ambassador Poroy’s mission in Nigeria.

Ambassador Poroy’s arrival is expected to further strengthen Türkiye–Nigeria relations across trade, cultural exchange, education, and defense cooperation.
