Kashmiri Man Gets Hajj Miracle After 35 Years

By Abdullahi Yusuf

For 35 years, Abdul Rehman Kumar watched others chase a dream he never dared claim as his own.

Each Hajj season, the 67-year-old would quietly stand outside Srinagar’s Hajj House—not with a suitcase or boarding pass, but with longing and prayer. While throngs of pilgrims embraced loved ones before departing for Islam’s holiest journey, Rehman remained on the sidelines—clad in modest clothing, his heart turned toward the Kaaba he had only seen in dreams.

“I came every year just to watch,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “That was enough to bring me peace. I never imagined I’d go myself.”

But one phone call changed everything.

After a brief video showing Rehman standing alone near the Hajj House went viral on social media last week, a cascade of compassion followed. Journalists tracked him down. During their visit, they handed him a phone. On the other end was a voice he had never heard before: a doctor from Kupwara, offering to sponsor his pilgrimage—and cover his medical expenses.

The doctor, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he was moved by the footage and verified Rehman’s identity through mosque committees. “My brother sent me the video and asked if I could help. After confirmation, I didn’t hesitate,” he said. “This man had been waiting for decades. I wanted to be part of answering that prayer.”

Rehman, who has no close family and survives on meagre means, was overwhelmed. Tears streamed down his face as he offered his gratitude. “May Allah grant everyone the chance to stand before His House,” he said. “Today, I feel I am no longer alone.”

For decades, he kept the dream quietly alive. He never applied for Hajj, convinced he was unworthy—or more practically, unable to afford the cost. What he did have was a vision: years ago, he dreamt of the Kaaba, its black-draped majesty seared into his memory. That dream became his anchor through years of hardship, solitude, and survival.

“I always thought, if not in this life, then the next,” he said. “But Allah has better plans.”

Rehman’s story has struck a chord beyond the valley. Thousands online shared his story, describing it as a testimony to resilience, patience, and the unseen ripples of kindness. One user wrote: “This is not just about Hajj. It’s about hope. It’s about being seen by the world when you least expect it.”

He has never flown on a plane. He doesn’t yet know what to pack or what rituals to follow. But the longest journey—the one of waiting—is finally behind him.

When asked what this moment means, Rehman looked away, eyes shimmering.

“My heart has already left,” he said with a smile. “The rest will follow.”
