By Sadiq Abdulfatah

5th of September 2025 earlier pronounced a public holiday to celebrate the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW), Nigerians have decided to dedicated this day to be a special jummah prayer to support Palestine against the ongoing genocidal war on Gaza.

The prayer is scheduled to hold at Dawah Centre, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Ijeshatedo, Lagos, where the Aqsa day is annually held.

Aqsa Day is the Nigeria’s biggest annual solidarity gathering of intellectual for Palestine. The event is usually attended by thousands of Nigerians from all walks of life.

It was stated that, unlike previous years when pro-Palestine supporters gathered in open spaces including the National Stadium in Surulere for awareness lectures, the organisers—Muslim Awareness International (MAI)—announced a change in focus for the 2025 edition.

Alhaji Abdul Waheed Atoyebi, the MAI Director,  on the 3rd September 2025, said “this year is going to be unique, considering the current situation in Gaza,”.

He further states: arrangements have been concluded to organise special prayers for our brothers and sisters in Palestine and other crises ridden world.

The programme tagged; “Special Juma’h Prayers for Gaza”, will commence at 10 a.m. with a pre-Khutbah lecture focusing on the manifestation of the Israeli agenda in Nigeria and Africa, adding that, “It will be followed by the Juma’h prayer with Qunoot, and a solidarity rally.”

He emphasized that the 23 months of genocide in Gaza which has led to the death of 60,839 Palestinians especially children and women with nearly 149,600 injured requires divine intervention, after several attempts to end the genocide proved abortive.

He accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, backed by the U.S. under President Donald Trump, of obstructing global peace efforts.

“That is why we felt it important to dedicate this year’s Aqsa Day to pray for our brothers and sisters in Gaza and across other crisis-ridden regions of the world,” he said, while also urging world leaders, especially Muslim leaders, to take a stand against “the unjust killing of innocent children, women, and journalists.”

He went on, urging Muslims across Nigeria, regardless of ideological leanings, to attend the programme and “be part of history.”
