Al-Asr (Golden Words of Allah Episode 65)

“By Time. Indeed, mankind is in loss. Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.” (Surah Al-Asr, 103:1-3)

By Abdullahi Yusuf

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. All perfect praise is due to Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, the Lord of the Worlds. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah, and Muhammad (pbuh), is His slave and final Messenger.

Surah Al-Asr is one of the shortest chapters in the Qur’an, containing only three verses, yet it encapsulates the entire message of Islam. Imam al-Shafi’i famously said: “If people were to reflect on this Surah alone, it would suffice them.”

The Chapter begins with a divine oath “By Time.” Allah draws our attention to the passing of time as a witness to the condition of mankind. Each tick of the clock, each passing day, is a reminder that our lives are slipping away, and we are either profiting from this time through faith and good deeds or incurring a great loss.

Imam Al-Shafi’i said: “If people reflected on this Surah alone, it would suffice them.” It reminds us that time itself will testify on the Day of Judgment, for us or against us.

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Take advantage of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before your preoccupation, and your life before your death.” (al-Hakim)

It is reported that whenever two Companions of the Prophet (pbuh) met, they would not part ways until one of them had recited Surah Al-Asr to the other. This practice was a way of reminding each other not to waste time and to live by faith, good deeds, truth, and patience.

Allah declares: “Indeed, mankind is in loss.” This loss is universal and It applies to every human being, except those who meet four conditions: Firm belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and divine decree. Translating faith into sincere action. Speaking and upholding the truth in all circumstances. Remaining steadfast in trials, grateful in ease, and obedient at all times.

And Allah knows best.
