Kidnapped Maga Girls Are Muslims, Not Christians – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern says the revelation exposes false claims of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria and urges careful reporting.

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has stated that the recent claims of a Christian genocide in Nigeria are false, after it was confirmed that all 24 girls kidnapped from a school in Maga, Kebbi State, are Muslims.

In a statement on Thursday, 27th November 2025, MURIC’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, said pictures of the girls in hijab and the names released by the Federal Government clearly show that the victims are Muslim. He criticized a U.S. Congressman who had earlier claimed the girls were Christians, calling such reports wrong and misleading.

Professor Akintola said that the school is in a mostly Muslim area and that the idea of “Christian genocide” in Nigeria is a myth. He added that Muslims are also being attacked and killed in the country, but their stories are often ignored.

He warned that false information could lead to serious mistakes if acted upon by other countries, pointing to past incidents like the U.S. invasion of Iraq over false claims of weapons. He urged the world to carefully check facts before taking any action in Nigeria.

MURIC also reassured Christians that Nigerian Muslims have no harmful intentions toward them. Professor Akintola said both Muslims and Christians face violence in the country and called for unity and truth instead of spreading stereotypes.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) is a Nigerian human rights group focused on protecting the rights and welfare of Muslims in the country. Founded and led by Professor Ishaq Akintola, the organization advocates for dialogue, peace, and justice while speaking out against discrimination, false narratives, and violence targeting Muslims. Over the years, MURIC has become a key voice on social and religious issues in Nigeria.
