President Sheikh Mohamed has ordered that seven new mosques in Abu Dhabi be named after each of the UAE’s emirates, a move designed to mark the country’s National Day, Eid Al Etihad, and highlight the nation’s unity.

The mosques, set to open in January, will together accommodate about 6,000 worshippers. Officials say the project is meant to remind future generations of the values that built the UAE — unity, generosity and progress.

Dr Omar Al Darei, chairman of the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat, said the initiative reflects the President’s commitment to keeping the spirit of the Union alive. He noted that the mosques were designed in a modern style that blends Islamic heritage with contemporary architecture.

The project is a joint effort between the Presidential Court, the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat, and the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi. It forms part of wider celebrations marking the UAE’s National Day.
