AIQM director says Islamic education helps build better leaders

The Director of the Ali Institute for Quran Memorisation (AIQM), Ustaz Ali Abdussalam, has called on governments at all levels to provide stronger support for Quranic Islamic centres as a way of building morally upright and patriotic future leaders in Nigeria.

Abdussalam made the call during the 5th graduation ceremony of students who completed full Quran memorisation at the institute in Ibadan. He described Quranic education as an important foundation for character development and national progress.

He said increased support for Islamic centres would help produce God-fearing citizens who are less likely to be involved in tribalism, terrorism and other social vices affecting the country. According to him, individuals with sound knowledge of the Quran and Islamic values are unlikely to engage in harmful behaviour.

The AIQM director expressed concern over the growing level of corruption in society and the exposure of children to negative influences through social media. He noted that early moral and spiritual training through Islamic education would greatly benefit both the younger generation and the nation.

Abdussalam explained that the institute focuses not only on Quran memorisation but also on preparing students to face life’s challenges morally, psychologically and spiritually. He said the goal is to raise individuals of good character who can positively influence society.

He disclosed that 160 students graduated during the ceremony, bringing the total number of Quran memorisers produced by the institute to 379 since 2019. He cited the example of an alumnus, Muqaddis Kolawole, now studying Artificial Intelligence Engineering at Cyprus International University, who returned a lost wallet containing $2,500, as evidence of the institute’s moral training.

Speakers at the event urged the graduands to continue improving their knowledge and to remain good ambassadors of Islam through their conduct. Parents and community leaders praised the institute for its consistency in nurturing disciplined individuals and encouraged families to invest in both Islamic and Western education.
