Former CJN Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad Dies at 71

Muslim Ummah and judiciary mourn respected judge

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, has passed away at the age of 71. He reportedly died at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, about two weeks before his 72nd birthday on December 31.

The death was confirmed by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, in a condolence message released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado.

The governor described the late jurist as a devoted public servant whose life was marked by justice, integrity and fear of Allah, saying his passing is a major loss to Bauchi State and the nation.

The Nigeria Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS) also expressed deep sorrow over his death, describing it as a great loss to the Nigerian judiciary, the legal profession and the Muslim community.

In its message, the association prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the former Chief Justice and asked that his service to justice and Islam be accepted as good deeds.

Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad is remembered as a Muslim leader who upheld fairness and accountability, values strongly rooted in Islamic teachings on justice.

The Nigeria Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS) is a national body that brings together Muslim students studying law in universities and law schools across Nigeria. The association focuses on promoting Islamic values, moral discipline and unity among Muslim law students, while also supporting academic excellence, legal awareness and engagement with issues affecting Islam, the legal profession and society at large.
