Nigeria’s imams hold nationwide prayers as insecurity worsens

Islamic leaders gathered in Kano to recite the Qur’an and pray for peace, urging spiritual renewal as violence linked to insurgency and banditry persists

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

Islamic leaders under the Association of Nigerian Imams have held a national congregational prayer in Kano, calling on Allah for divine intervention as insecurity continues to threaten lives and stability across Nigeria.

The solemn gathering took place at the Sheikh Ahmadu Tijjani Mosque, where imams and worshippers from different parts of Kano State assembled to collectively seek solutions through the Qur’an and supplication. The Jama’atul Imams devoted the session to deep Qur’anic recitation, reflection, and prayers, asking Allah to guide the nation toward peace and safety.

Speaking at the event, the national president of the association, Sheikh Muhammad Nasir Adam, said the worsening security situation demands sincere spiritual renewal and collective repentance. He explained that the decision to hold the prayer was rooted in Islamic teachings that emphasize turning to Allah during times of hardship.

“We resolved to recite the entire Qur’an and seek Allah’s intervention because of Nigeria’s present condition,” Sheikh Adam said. “We are also praying against both internal and external forces attempting to destabilise our country.”

He described prayer as the strongest and most reliable weapon available to believers, noting that Nigeria is grappling with insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and emerging terror groups. According to him, despite the country’s abundant resources and resilient population, lasting peace can only come through humility before Allah, sincere prayers, and unity among the people.

Referencing challenges such as Boko Haram, Lakurawa, banditry, and kidnappings, Sheikh Adam stressed that Islam teaches reliance on Allah alongside lawful efforts to confront injustice and oppression. He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in faith and hopeful of Allah’s mercy.

The association extended the call beyond Muslims, inviting Nigerians of all faiths to join in prayers, fasting, and moral reflection for national healing. It also announced plans to replicate similar prayer sessions across all 36 states of the federation.

Traditional rulers, civil society groups, and community leaders were equally encouraged to join what the imams described as a “spiritual struggle” against insecurity.

“We call on all imams and the faithful nationwide to continue praying for lasting peace and security in our dear country,” Sheikh Adam said, reaffirming that Islam upholds peace, justice, and the sanctity of human life.
