“And do not raise your voice in prayer, nor lower it completely, but seek a way between the two.” (Surah Al-Isra 7:110)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. All perfect praise is due to Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, the Lord of the Worlds. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah, and Muhammad (pbuh), is His slave and final Messenger.

Every religion has its manner of worship. In Islam, worship is not defined by performance or volume but by obedience. Allah did not leave acts of devotion to personal taste, He revealed them with precision and entrusted their explanation to His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

For this reason, Islam views excessive noise in worship not as passion but as disorder.

Allah set the tone of worship when He commanded moderation in prayer, neither shouted nor whispered, but balanced. This divine instruction establishes a principle: devotion is not measured by how loudly it is expressed, but by how closely it follows revelation.

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) retired to the mosque. He heard them (the people) reciting the Qur’an in a loud voice. He removed the curtain and said: Lo! every one of you is calling his Lord quietly. One should not trouble the other and one should not raise the voice in recitation or in prayer over the voice of the other. (Sunan Abi Dawud 1332).

When Umar ibn al-Khattab (ra) once heard raised voices in the mosque, he was angered by the breach of its sanctity. Only upon learning that the offenders were strangers unfamiliar with the etiquette did he restrain himself. This incident reflects how seriously the early Muslims regarded the mosque as a place of calm worship, not vocal competition.

In the time of the Prophet (pbuh), the structure of congregational prayer was clear and uncluttered. The Adhan was called. Silence followed. The Iqamah was given. Prayer commenced. Upon completion, each worshipper engaged in personal remembrance quietly, individually, without chorus or amplification. There were no announcements, no collective chants, no layered voices battling for dominance.

This was not austerity; it was clarity.

Today, however, many mosques have drifted from this prophetic balance. Loudspeakers mounted for the noble purpose of the Adhan are extended into every corner of worship. What follows is often a cascade of voices, slogans, chants, and layered supplications before prayer, during intervals, and long after taslīm. The atmosphere intended for reflection becomes restless. Concentration fractures. Neighbours are disturbed. Worshippers compete audibly rather than submit quietly.

The Prophet (pbuh) warned: “You will surely follow the ways of those who came before you, step by step…” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

This warning was not limited to belief, but extended to practiceincluding how worship is performed and displayed.

Imam al-Nawawi explained that remembrance after prayer should be audible only to the extent that the individual hears himself, not others. The mosque was never intended to be an arena of sound, but a sanctuary of submission.

Acts of worship are Allah’s exclusive right to define. He taught Adam words of repentance. He taught us Al-Fatihah. He defined ruku’, sujud, adhkar, and supplications through His Messenger (pbuh). To add, amplify or redesign worship according to preference is not devotion, it is presumption.

The beauty of Islam lies in its uniformity. When worship is practiced as taught, mosques resemble one another, hearts align, and unity is preserved. When innovation creeps in, differences multiply, and noise replaces serenity.
