Niyyah: Where It All Begins – Ramadan Digest (Day 2)

Ramadan is not just about fasting from food and drink; it is a time to refine our hearts, deepen our faith and strengthen our taqwa, God-consciousness in all that we do.

By Abdullahi Yusuf

Tonight’s Taraweeh at Masjid Al Haram will be led by two imams: Sheikh Abdullah Juhany, and Sheikh Bandar Baleelah (Witr)

Global Ramadan News

Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has urged Muslims and Christians to promote unity as Ramadan and Lent began on the same day, describing the rare coincidence as a symbol of shared faith and common values. In a State House statement, Tinubu said the convergence highlights Nigeria’s spiritual bonds and called for reflection, prayer and harmony during the sacred periods.

Ireland – Christian and Muslim leaders have described the simultaneous start of Lent and Ramadan as “a beautiful coincidence,” emphasizing shared traditions of prayer, fasting and charity. Catholic Archbishop of Dublin Dermot Farrell noted strong Ash Wednesday attendance, saying public expressions of faith remain visible despite perceptions of religious decline.

Morocco – Authorities declared Thursday, Feb. 19, as the first day of Ramadan 2026 after the national crescent-sighting committee confirmed the moon was visible. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs made the announcement late Wednesday, aligning the kingdom’s start of fasting with several other nations.

Türkiye – President Recep Tayyip Erdogan extended Ramadan greetings, praying the holy month strengthens unity and solidarity in Türkiye and across the Muslim world. In a message shared on social media, he described Ramadan as a time when “the doors of mercy are opened,” underscoring its themes of compassion and togetherness.

United States – President Donald Trump marked the start of Ramadan with a message highlighting prayer, charity and religious liberty. The White House statement described the month as a season of spiritual renewal and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to protecting freedom of worship.

India (Hyderabad) – Moon-sighting committees in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh confirmed the crescent Wednesday night, ushering in Ramadan on Thursday. It marks the first time in 33 years that the holy month has begun in February, last occurring in 1993.

Syria – In Damascus, lanterns and decorative lights are illuminating the historic Old City markets ahead of Ramadan. Merchants say improved supply this year has stabilized prices, while residents describe the decorations as symbols of joy, tradition and communal spirit.

Health Tips:
Prioritize Protein at Suhoor: Eating protein-rich foods like eggs, beans, yoghurt, lentils, and nuts helps maintain muscle strength and keeps you fuller for longer. Pair them with complex carbs for sustained energy throughout the day.

Today’s Challenge:
Reflect on your journey of faith. Identify one habit you want to improve to become closer to Allah in  this year Ramadan and take the first step today.

“Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 38, Sahih Muslim 759)

“There are two moments of joy for the fasting person: one at the time of breaking his fast and the other when he meets his Lord.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 1904, Sahih Muslim 1151)

May Allah strengthen our taqwa and grant us acceptance this Ramadan!
