The New York chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) has spoken out against a shocking attack in Central Park, where a 45 year old Muslim woman was targeted while sitting on a bench near East 109th Street.

According to reports, 30 year old Lateef Caldwell allegedly pinned the woman down and tried to forcibly remove her clothing, including her full body hijab, before bystanders stepped in to stop him. Caldwell, who was on parole for a previous sexual assault, was arrested and charged with attempted rape and other offenses.

CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said the attack was “deeply alarming” because it happened in broad daylight in a public space. She praised the bystanders who intervened and the NYPD for acting quickly, and she prayed for the woman’s recovery from the trauma she experienced.

CAIR-NY reminded the public of its mission to protect civil rights, fight Islamophobia, and support American Muslims. The group said attacks like this show why it’s important to raise awareness, defend Muslim women, and ensure public safety.

The organization encouraged the community to stand together, help victims of hate crimes, and report attacks to authorities. It also stressed the need to protect women who wear the hijab, who are sometimes targeted for their faith.

This incident is a serious reminder of the challenges Muslim Americans face in public spaces, and CAIR-NY reaffirmed its commitment to help victims, promote justice, and fight discrimination.
