US Attack on Iran Could Turn Into Another Vietnam, Medvedev Warns

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

Russia’s Security Council Deputy Chairman, Dmitry Medvedev, has warned the United States that any ground invasion of Iran could end in a major defeat, similar to the Vietnam War.

He described US actions toward Iran as a serious strategic mistake, saying Washington would eventually pay a heavy price. His comments come as reports suggest the US is preparing for a possible ground offensive, despite Iran repeatedly stating it is ready to confront such a move.

There are also reports that a US-Israeli coalition may try to take control of Kharg Island to pressure Iran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz for their ships.

Medvedev warned that sending troops far from US territory could trap America in a long and difficult war, just like in Vietnam, where US forces spent about a decade fighting in a distant country but failed to find a proper way to exit the conflict.

He also cautioned that such a ground operation would bring deadly consequences not only for the US but for the wider region.

On Thursday, Iran’s Army Ground Force commander, Brigadier General Ali Jahanshahi, warned against any invasion, saying it would be more dangerous and costly for the attackers. He added that Iranian forces are fully prepared and will strongly defend the country.

The current escalation began on February 28, when US-Israeli airstrikes reportedly killed senior Iranian officials and military commanders. In response, Iran has carried out almost daily missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli controlled areas as well as US bases and assets across the region.

Iran has also restricted movement through the Strait of Hormuz, especially for oil and gas tankers linked to its adversaries and their partners.

Medvedev further claimed that the US has been telling Persian Gulf Arab countries that its actions are only meant to defend itself and Israel in the conflict.

However, he warned that an even bigger war in the Middle East could still happen, and that the region might face long-term instability for many years to come.

Following the escalation, Russian officials have also suggested that some Persian Gulf countries may begin pursuing their own nuclear capabilities for protection.
