SCSN Demands Real Action Over Plateau Killings

Group urges government to take real steps to stop violence and protect lives

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has condemned the recent killings in Angwan Rukuba, Jos, Plateau State, describing the incident as a painful reminder of how unsafe lives have become in the country.

According to a statement by its Secretary General, Nafiu Baba Ahmad, the council said the attack shows the urgent need for strong and responsible action by authorities to stop the repeated violence across Nigeria.

The council said it is worried that government reactions to such attacks have become predictable, with officials only issuing statements instead of taking real action. It stressed that words alone are no longer enough.

According to the SCSN, protecting lives and property is the main duty of government at all levels. It called on leaders and security agencies to move beyond talk and show the political will needed to end the killings.

The council also noted that human life is sacred in Islam, adding that killing innocent people, no matter their religion or tribe, is a serious offence against God and humanity.

It said the pattern of the Angwan Rukuba attack suggests it was planned and carried out in a coordinated way, possibly to cause wider religious and communal conflict in Plateau State.

The group raised concerns about the possible involvement of well funded groups, including foreign elements, linked to the spread of small arms, cross-border movement of fighters, and funding of violent networks in Nigeria.

It warned that such groups often take advantage of religious and ethnic divisions to create instability, weaken unity, and keep violence going for their own interests.

The council also expressed concern over the growing insecurity in Northern Nigeria, especially in the North-East and North-West, where communities continue to face insurgency, banditry, and mass killings.

It paid tribute to security personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty, saying their sacrifice should lead to a stronger and more effective security response.

The SCSN also sent condolences to the government and people of Plateau State and to the families of the victims. It urged religious leaders from all faiths to promote peace, patience, and understanding among their followers.

Finally, the council called for a full investigation into the attack and urged Nigerians to stay alert and united, stressing that the time has come for real action to stop the cycle of violence in the country.
