Anwar Ibrahim has called on Muslims in Malaysia to strengthen their knowledge of modern technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), while still holding firmly to Islamic teachings and values from the Quran.

He made the call during the opening of the National Quran Recitation and Memorisation Competition in Kuala Nerus, saying that progress in science and technology is important for overcoming today’s global challenges.

Anwar said Muslims must learn new skills and modern knowledge such as AI and information technology, but without abandoning their religious and traditional foundations. He said both faith and knowledge are needed together for real progress.

He also linked current global conflicts, including in Gaza, southern Lebanon, and Iran, to the need for stronger preparation in knowledge, technology, and unity among Muslims. He said these situations show the importance of being ready and not left behind.

The Prime Minister further called for reforms in the education system so that it remains rooted in tradition while also focusing more on science and modern fields.

This year’s Quran competition features more than 100 participants from different categories, including recitation and memorisation, and runs for several days with improved digital systems and updated formats.
