The group warns that the decision could affect unity and calls for immediate reversal

The League of Imams and Alfas in Ogun State has rejected a plan by Governor Dapo Abiodun to return public schools to missionary owners, describing the move as wrong one and which could cause tension.

The group said the policy could affect peace and religious balance in the state. It warned that such a decision may create division among people of different faiths if it is carried out.

Governor Abiodun had earlier said the government plans to return missionary schools as part of efforts to improve partnerships in the education sector. He stated this while receiving Michael Francis Crotty during a visit, alongside Catholic leaders including Francis Obafemi Adesina and Peter Odetoyinbo.

Reacting to the announcement, the Secretary-General of the League, Tajudeen Mustafa Adewunmi, said the plan does not reflect fairness in a diverse society. He explained that public schools were taken over by the government in the past to remove religious control and promote equal access for all.

He warned that reversing that decision could weaken the unity the state has enjoyed for many years. According to him, such a move may lead to distrust and affect peaceful coexistence among residents.

The group also said the policy appears to favour one religious group over others and said it is unacceptable. It insisted that public institutions should remain for everyone, since they are funded and maintained with public resources.

The Muslim body called for the immediate cancellation of the plan. It added that failing to do so could be seen as ignoring fairness and inclusive governance.

It further warned that moving ahead without proper consultation may lead to strong but lawful opposition from the Muslim community and other concerned groups.

The League concluded by urging the government to focus on policies that promote unity rather than division in the state.
