Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson has strongly criticized Donald Trump over the ongoing war with Iran. He said the decision to go to war is the worst foreign policy mistake any US president has made in his lifetime.
In an interview on BBC programme on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Carlson was asked if Trump is being controlled or heavily influenced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of which he stated that it would not be completely wrong to say Israel has a strong influence on US decisions regarding the war.
Carlson said the decision to go to war with Iran, especially with the aim of changing its government, was a serious mistake. He added that in past years, some US presidents had refused pressure from Israel, and he said he wished Trump had also refused such pressure but did not.
He further stated that Israeli officials played a role in shaping US involvement in the war. According to him, the decisions taken have damaged both the United States and other countries involved. In earlier comments made on Newsmax, Carlson also mentioned that Trump is not fully in control of his decisions and is being influenced by other forces around him.
After Carlson’s comments, Trump responded on social media, where he criticized Carlson and other war critics. He dismissed them as unimportant and said their views go against his political movement. Trump also said Carlson actions are under the influence of his dismissal from Fox News.
The war with Iran began during ongoing nuclear negotiations and has since become a major political issue in the United States. Some supporters of Trump have also questioned the decision, especially those who believe outside groups may be influencing US foreign policy decisions.
Carlson also reacted strongly to Trump’s earlier statements threatening Iranian civilian infrastructure. He described those threats as wrong, calling them a war crime and saying they are morally unacceptable. He made these remarks during an episode of his show on April 6.
Former US lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene also responded to the situation. She called for Trump to be removed from office under the 25th Amendment after he warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran did not meet his demands.
Public reaction in the United States has also been largely negative, according to polls. Many critics say the war is very costly and has not achieved clear results so far.
