GCC Awqaf Meet to Boost Islamic Cooperation

The gulf cooperation council meeting focus on developing waqf systems, Islamic research exchange, and promoting charitable work

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs took part in the 41st meeting of the Permanent Committee of Specialists in Islamic Affairs and Awqaf across GCC countries, held via video conference and chaired by Bahrain.

The meeting brought together officials and experts from Gulf countries to strengthen cooperation in Islamic affairs and endowment (waqf) systems, as well as to improve coordination and share expertise among member states.

The delegation from Qatar was led by Dr. Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Ghanem Al Thani, along with senior officials responsible for Islamic affairs and endowments.

Participants discussed several proposals and research papers aimed at improving waqf systems and increasing their social and development impact. These included ideas on better management, transparency, and long-term sustainability of endowment projects.

They also reviewed joint initiatives such as “Gulf Waqf Week,” awareness programs to promote charitable work, and competitions designed to encourage public participation in endowment activities.

Other discussions focused on developing a system to measure the impact of endowments in society, improving knowledge exchange between countries, and modernising mosque architecture while preserving Islamic identity.

The meeting further explored ways to promote cultural dialogue between East and West to improve understanding and highlight Islamic values of tolerance and coexistence.

Officials stressed the need for stronger unity among GCC countries in Islamic affairs and endowment development, saying it would help improve institutional work and support community welfare.

The ministry said its participation reflects its commitment to Gulf cooperation and to supporting initiatives that develop waqf systems and keep them aligned with modern needs.
