President Zardari Stresses Islamic Thought of Iqbal in National Life on Iqbal Day

Calls for justice, moral values, and implementation of Islamic principles in society

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari has reaffirmed the importance of bringing the Islamic and intellectual teachings of Allama Muhammad Iqbal into national life, saying their true value lies in their practical application in building a just, moral, and balanced society based on Islamic principles.

In a message marking Iqbal Day on April 21, 2026, the President paid tribute to Allama Muhammad Iqbal, describing him as a great Muslim thinker, poet of the East, and visionary whose ideas provided intellectual and spiritual direction for the Muslim Ummah and the creation of Pakistan. He said Iqbal revived faith, self-respect, and action among Muslims at a time of decline and uncertainty.

Zardari said Iqbal’s philosophy is deeply rooted in Islamic thought and reflects a balance of spiritual guidance and intellectual development. He noted that Iqbal presented a vision of society based on justice, dignity, and the full development of human potential in line with Islamic values.

He further stressed that fairness in social and economic life is a core principle in Iqbal’s thought, especially the idea that those who work must be given their rightful share, and that justice is essential for a stable and moral society.

The President said modern global challenges, including conflict and division, make Iqbal’s Islamic message even more relevant today. He highlighted Iqbal’s call for love over hatred, justice over oppression, and hope over despair, adding that true peace is achieved through moral reform and strong character guided by faith.

Quoting Iqbal’s poetry, he said true humanity lies in respecting human dignity, a principle that aligns with Islamic teachings on the value of human life.

He added that Iqbal’s ideas apply to all sections of society, encouraging ambition and discipline among youth, dignity and participation for women, purpose-driven education for students, and honesty and self-reliance for citizens. He also highlighted Iqbal’s concept of “Khudi,” describing it as the development of a strong Islamic self-awareness that builds confidence, responsibility, and moral strength.

The President said education in Iqbal’s vision is not only for livelihood but also for moral and spiritual development, stressing that knowledge must build character and serve society in accordance with Islamic values.

He added that Iqbal’s intellectual legacy is respected beyond Pakistan, including in Iran, where his Persian poetry is widely appreciated.
