Qur’an Symposium in Oman Focuses on Human Development and Identity

Scholars discuss role of Qur’an in education, values, and balanced human growth

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

A two-day symposium titled “The Qur’an and Human Development” has begun at Sultan Qaboos University under the patronage of Sayyid Khalid bin Hilal Al Busaidi, Minister of the Diwan of Royal Court in Oman.

The event is organised by the Imam Jaber bin Zaid Endowment Foundation and brings together Qur’anic scholars and Islamic law experts from Oman and other countries.

The symposium aims to highlight the role of the Holy Qur’an in shaping human thinking, morals, and identity, with discussions focused on how its teachings can support education, values, and personal development.

In the main session, participants described the Qur’an as a key reference for guiding human thought and balancing knowledge with moral values. They also called for strengthening unity in the Islamic intellectual vision and reducing divisions in understanding.

Discussions also emphasized the importance of balancing real-world understanding with ethical and moral principles, while linking knowledge with faith to develop a well-rounded individual who contributes positively to society.

The first day featured five research papers examining how Qur’anic teachings can be integrated with modern fields of knowledge for human and societal development.

Three public lectures were also held, covering different Qur’anic perspectives on human growth and development.

A specialized workshop titled “The Jurisprudence of the Self in the Holy Qur’an: Building Consciousness and Psychological Health in Education” was presented by Dr. Abdul Rahman Thakir Al Hashmi. It focused on using Qur’anic principles to improve psychological awareness and educational practices among specialists in the Ministry of Education.

The symposium is expected to conclude with recommendations aimed at strengthening the role of the Qur’an in education, intellectual life, and personal development, with the goal of building individuals who are balanced in thought, spirituality, and behaviour.
