Threatening Email Targets Muslim Student Group at University of Calgary

Police and campus authorities investigate hate message amid safety concerns

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

A threatening email sent to the Muslim Students Association (MSA) at the University of Calgary Canada, has raised concern among Muslim students, with many expressing fear over growing Islamophobia on campus.

The message, received earlier this month, targeted the Muslim student group without warning. MSA president Aitazaz Shah said the association is unsure what triggered the email but confirmed that it is being treated seriously due to its threatening content.

He said the incident reflects a broader rise in Islamophobia, adding that such messages are distressing for Muslim students who are focused on community support and charitable activities.

The MSA is now working with campus security and the National Council of Canadian Muslims to strengthen safety measures, especially during Friday prayers and upcoming events.

In a statement, the university confirmed it had received reports of the threatening email and said it is handling the matter under established safety protocols. It added that it takes all such incidents seriously and is working to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Officials also advised the group to report the case to the Calgary Police Service hate crimes unit, which has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.

For many Muslim students, the incident has affected their sense of safety on campus. Student Umer Abdur Rehman said the message was shocking and made him feel unsafe in what he believed was a secure learning environment.

Despite concerns, Shah said there is no indication of immediate danger and described the email as an isolated incident. He added that the MSA represents around 7,000 Muslim students and is actively involved in charitable work, raising over $100,000 annually for humanitarian causes worldwide.

University officials have urged students to remain alert and report any suspicious activity as investigations continue.
