Iran Says Hormuz Transit Depends on New Security Rules

Official says post-war shipping can resume if Iran’s security conditions are met

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

Iran says passage through the Strait of Hormuz after the war will only be allowed under new rules that protect the country’s security interests.

Iranian Deputy Defense Minister Brigadier General Reza Talaei Nik made the statement during a meeting of defense ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Tuesday.

He said Iran understands international concerns over current restrictions in the strategic waterway, but added that the measures were introduced in response to US-Israeli attacks that began in late February and paused with a ceasefire on April 8.

According to the official, Iran is prepared to allow commercial ships to pass smoothly once the conflict ends permanently.

He said reopening normal transit would depend on security protocols that do not threaten Iran’s national safety.

The remarks come as Iranian authorities work on a new legal system for transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

Under the proposed system, ships owned by or linked to Israel would reportedly face a total ban, while vessels connected to hostile countries could face restrictions.

Iran is also planning a toll system for ships using the strait, saying the move would help offset losses caused by years of Western sanctions.

Current restrictions in the waterway have pushed global oil prices higher, increasing pressure on the United States and Europe, while analysts say diplomacy may be needed to restore normal shipping flows.
