A senior adviser to Iran’s Leader, Ali Akbar Velayati, has warned U.S. President Donald Trump against trying to alter the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, saying any such move would create greater problems for Washington.

Velayati said the strategic waterway remains under the control of Iran’s armed forces and warned that increasing tensions there could have serious global consequences.

In a message posted on X on Sunday, the former foreign minister said Trump does not fully understand the importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global energy supplies.

He said anyone who interferes with what he described as one of the world’s key lifelines could face a political deadlock.

The remarks come as Trump continues to pressure Iran and has threatened renewed military action if Tehran does not remove restrictions it placed on passage through the strait in early March.

Those restrictions were introduced after U.S.-Israeli military action against Iran and have contributed to higher global energy and commodity prices, according to reports.

Analysts have also warned that prices could rise further if no long-term agreement is reached to prevent renewed conflict following the April 8 ceasefire.

Velayati also dismissed Trump’s threats of tougher economic pressure on Iran, saying such remarks ignore wider geopolitical and economic realities.

He added that developments in the Strait of Hormuz also affect global food security and supply chains, making the issue larger than a dispute between two countries.
