IRGC Says Hormuz Transit Will Be Safe Again

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will gradually return to safe and stable conditions as tensions in the Persian Gulf begin to ease.

In a statement posted Wednesday, the IRGC Navy said shipping companies and vessel crews had shown good cooperation with regulations introduced by Iran for transit through the strategic waterway.

The force said passage through the strait would continue to improve now that threats from the United States and Israel against Iran were declining.

It thanked captains and shipowners operating in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman for following the rules and contributing to maritime security in the region.

According to the statement, new procedures have been introduced to help ensure secure and orderly movement through the Strait of Hormuz.

The announcement came two days after Iranian forces said they launched warning missiles and drones near U.S. warships approaching the area.

Earlier on Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had dropped a recently announced plan to force Iran to reopen the strait.

Iran has maintained restrictions on passage through Hormuz since the early stages of the conflict that began in March, citing repeated violations of a later ceasefire agreement.

Reports on Tuesday also said Iran was preparing a new system that would allow vessels to move through designated corridors in the waterway.

There have also been indications that Iran and the United States are moving closer to an agreement that could help end the confrontation and reduce restrictions in the strait.
