The Oyo State League of Imams and Alfas and the Muslim Community of Oyo State have held a special prayer session in Ibadan over the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.

The gathering took place at the Yidi Agodi Prayer Ground, where hundreds of clerics, scholars, and community leaders prayed for the safe release of the victims.

The abduction reportedly involved 46 pupils and teachers taken during a coordinated attack on schools in Oriire on May 15, while one of the abducted teachers was later killed by the kidnappers.

A video that circulated online showed one of the victims appealing for urgent government intervention, sparking public outrage and protests by teachers’ unions and stakeholders.

Speaking on behalf of the Muslim Community of Oyo State, Secretary-General Alhaji Murisiku Abidemi Siyanbade said the prayer was aimed at seeking Allah’s intervention for the safe return of the abductees and an end to insecurity.

He warned that the spread of bandit attacks into Oyo State posed a wider threat to the South-West and beyond, calling for urgent action to stop further escalation.

Siyanbade also stressed that those behind the attacks do not represent Islam, describing them as criminals who are endangering peace in the country.

He urged citizens to support security efforts by reporting suspicious movements and remaining vigilant in their communities.

The Grand Chief Imam of Oyo State, Sheikh Abdul-Ganiyy Abubakar Agbotomokekere, said the prayer session was necessary to seek divine help in ending kidnappings and insecurity.

Other speakers, including Islamic scholars and student leaders, called for unity, stronger security measures, and cooperation between communities and government to address the crisis.

The Muslim leaders collectively reaffirmed that Islam condemns kidnapping and violence in all forms.
