Yoruba Imams Disown Extremist Groups, Reject False Representation

League of Imams and Alfas says no group or individual promoting hatred, division or extremism speaks for it

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

The League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland has distanced itself from any group or individual whose teachings promote division, hatred, extremism, intolerance or any ideology that goes against the Qur’an and Sunnah.

This was contained in a statement issued in Ibadan, Oyo State, and jointly signed by leading Islamic clerics across the South-West.

The League said it is not connected to, nor does it recognise, any organisation or individual claiming to represent it while spreading extremist or divisive messages. It stressed that such persons have no authority to speak on its behalf.

It further stated that it completely rejects teachings, statements or activities that contradict the authentic teachings of Islam as found in the Qur’an, the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), and the principles of moderation on which the League was founded.

According to the statement, any individual or group that promotes hatred, extremism, intolerance or religious division cannot be regarded as representing the League, which was established in 1964.

The League reaffirmed its commitment to Islamic unity, peaceful coexistence, religious scholarship and moral guidance across Yorubaland and Nigeria. It added that since its creation in 1964, it has consistently promoted a balanced and moderate understanding of Islam.

It also advised Muslims and members of the public to verify information through its official leadership structure and to ignore any false claims made by unauthorised groups or individuals.

The statement also comes amid rising security concerns in parts of Oyo State, including recent attacks and abductions of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
