IBB Hails Nupe Translation of the Holy Qur’an

Says translation will strengthen Qur’anic understanding among Nupe Muslims

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

Former military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has praised the translation of the Holy Qur’an into the Nupe language, describing it as an important step that will improve the understanding, study and practice of Islam among the Nupe people.

Speaking at the unveiling of the translated Qur’an at the Wadata Palace in Bida, Babangida said the project was not only a major religious achievement for the Nupe community but also a valuable contribution to Nigeria’s Islamic heritage by making the message of the Holy Qur’an more accessible in the people’s native language.

Represented by the Pro-Chancellor of Abdulkadir Kure University, Professor Mohammed Kuta Yahaya, Babangida said translating the Holy Qur’an into indigenous languages is an act of devotion and scholarship that helps people better understand the words of Allah in their mother tongue.

He said the translation would strengthen the faith of Muslims by helping them build a closer relationship with Allah while allowing the Qur’anic teachings of mercy, justice, compassion and righteousness to be better understood in homes, markets and communities.

Babangida noted that the project was not the beginning of a new tradition but a revival of the long-standing legacy of Islamic scholarship in Nupe land. He added that it reflects the rich Islamic heritage of the Nupe people and shows that faith and culture can work together to promote moral values and social development.

The former military leader also expressed concern that the digital age has reduced the culture of dedicated Qur’anic learning, patience and discipline that distinguished earlier generations of Islamic scholars. He said the Nupe translation provides an opportunity to revive deeper study of the Holy Qur’an by making its message easier for more people to understand.
