BREAKING NEWS: Lagos Olori Ratibi, Sheikh Tijani Gbajabiamila, Dies

By Sadiq Abdulfatah

Sheikh Imam Tijani Olubodun Shehu Gbajabiamila, the Olori Ratibi of Lagos, died on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

His son, Ibikunle Lateef, confirmed his passing in a Facebook post on Saturday.

Sheikh Gbajabiamila was buried the same afternoon at Iponri Central Mosque in accordance with Islamic burial rites.

Until his death, he served as the Olori Ratibi of Lagos, a respected religious position responsible for overseeing the activities of prayer leaders across mosques in the state.

His death has been described as a great loss to the Muslim community in Lagos, where he was widely respected for his scholarship, leadership and service to Islam.

Tributes described the late cleric as a devoted Islamic scholar, teacher and preacher whose knowledge, wisdom and dedication to the Ummah positively impacted many lives. His legacy, they said, would continue through the many people he taught and inspired.

Many also prayed for Allah (SWT) to forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and give his family the strength and patience to bear the loss.

An Olori Ratibi is a prominent and highly respected Islamic title-holder in Yoruba traditional and religious administration (such as in Lagos, Egbaland, and Osogboland)
