Islamic body says no Muslim organisation is seeking to establish Hisbah in Jos North

The Plateau State chapter of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has dismissed reports that a Muslim organisation is planning to establish Hisbah in Jos North Local Government Area, describing the claim as unfounded.
The clarification followed a statement by the Plateau State Government alleging that Hisbah activities had commenced in the area. The government described the reported development as illegal and unacceptable, sparking reactions within and outside the state.
However, JNI Secretary in Plateau State, Dr Salim Musa Umar, said no Islamic organisation in the state had announced plans to establish Hisbah.
“There is nothing like that. It has never been discussed and it is not part of what is being considered,” Umar said.
He explained that the controversy originated on social media after individuals appeared in uniforms reportedly created using artificial intelligence and claimed that they had established Hisbah in Jos North.
According to him, the images and claims were widely circulated online, prompting public reactions and concerns over the alleged development.
Umar stressed that an organisation such as Hisbah could not be legally established in the state without enabling legislation from the Plateau State House of Assembly.
He therefore called on the state government to conduct proper investigations before making conclusions on sensitive religious issues, particularly matters capable of creating tension between communities.
The JNI official also appealed to social media users to avoid creating or circulating information that could cause misunderstanding or threaten peaceful coexistence.
He urged the public to exercise caution when encountering religious or security-related claims online and to verify such information before sharing it.
