53 African countries take part in Saudi-backed Islamic contest

The second edition of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Competition for the memorization of the Holy Qur’an and the Prophetic Sunnah has officially begun in Dakar, Senegal, marking the start of its preliminary rounds. The event brings together participants from across Africa in a major Islamic educational gathering.

Organized by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance, the competition features about 100 contestants representing 53 African countries. It aims to promote the memorization of the Qur’an and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The programme is being held with the participation of the Saudi Embassy in Senegal, represented by its Religious Attaché, and in cooperation with the General Authority for Awqaf. It reflects Saudi Arabia’s continued efforts to support Islamic learning and outreach beyond its borders.

The competition is designed to encourage young Muslims to strengthen their connection with the Qur’an and Sunnah, while also building discipline, moral values, and a spirit of dedication through structured and healthy competition.

Officials said the initiative is one of the ministry’s key international programmes, helping to strengthen religious and cultural ties among Muslim communities across Africa. It also provides a platform for participants to showcase their knowledge and commitment.

The event is expected to promote unity, excellence, and devotion among African youth, while reinforcing the importance of Islamic teachings in personal growth and community development.
