Interfaith dialogue in Norway has placed the challenges facing Muslims, including discrimination, religious intolerance and hate speech, at the centre of discussions during Arendalsuka, the country’s annual public debate forum.

The Norwegian Islamic Dialogue Network participated in the forum, where participants examined issues surrounding Muslim identity, freedom of religion, freedom of expression and the growing challenges faced by Muslims in society.

The discussions also focused on the experiences of young Muslims, particularly the pressure created by intolerance and discrimination, as well as the challenges of expressing their religious and cultural identity while participating fully in Norwegian society.

A session titled “When Hate Against Groups is Disguised as Religious Criticism” examined the distinction between legitimate criticism of religious beliefs and speech that crosses into discrimination, incitement or hatred against Muslims as a religious community.

Representatives of the Norwegian Islamic Dialogue Network stressed that confronting extremism and anti-Muslim hate requires dialogue and cooperation between Islamic and other religious institutions, civil society and government bodies.

They said religious institutions have an important role beyond worship and religious activities, including helping address social challenges, preventing extremism and creating opportunities for different communities to understand and respect one another.

The participants also emphasised the importance of protecting religious freedom and allowing Muslims to maintain and express their Islamic identity without facing discrimination or hostility.

The Norwegian Islamic Dialogue Network promotes interfaith and intercultural dialogue and seeks to strengthen understanding, peaceful co-existence and social cohesion. Its participation in the forum highlighted the role of Muslim and other religious institutions in addressing hatred and division within society.
