Ogun Hajj Airlift—A Triumph of Vision and a New Dawn for the Gateway State

By Asiwaju Kamal’deen Akintunde

The successful airlift of Ogun State pilgrims from the newly constructed Gateway International Airport (GIA) yesterday marks a momentous turning point in the annals of both the aviation industry and the faith community in Nigeria. It signals the commencement of international operations with the most sacred of undertakings—the Hajj pilgrimage.

To the Muslim Ummah, yesterday’s event felt like a second commissioning. It was not merely a day of departure but a day of profound history. As the saying goes, “If you can not make history, you should be part of it.” For the first time in our nation’s Hajj operations, the Ogun contingent began their spiritual journey from the comfort and tranquillity of their home base. This magnificent facility has effectively eliminated the logistical bottlenecks and perennial challenges that pilgrims traditionally face during Hajj operations.

His Excellency, Governor Dapo Abiodun, deserves high commendation for his visionary leadership. By ensuring the GIA met all mandatory international requirements, he has transformed a “Cargo Airport” into a functional reality and a seamless “Gateway to the Holy Land.”

For me personally, this is a moment of deep reflection. I recall exactly two years ago, during the annual government-organized Iftar at the Arcade Ground, Oke-Mosan. While giving a goodwill message in the presence of the Governor, I emphatically stated that this airport, then under construction, would serve the pilgrimage needs of both the Muslim and Christian faithful. To see that vision manifest yesterday—with international flights commencing through a spiritual undertaking—is a “good omen” for the sustainability of future domestic, foreign, and cargo operations.

While we celebrate this milestone, it is imperative that we look toward to the the future. We urge the State Government to ensure the full completion of all ongoing ancillary facilities and to prioritize the meticulous maintenance of the GIA to sustain its international standards.

As a charge to the intending pilgrims, they should remember that they are ambassadors of our faith and our nation. They carry the image, the hopes, and the prayers of millions. We charge them to be worthy representatives in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Most importantly, we ask you to intercede for our country. Pray for Nigeria to overcome its current security and economic hurdles. Pray for our leadership, that Almighty Allah may grant them the wisdom and compassion to navigate our nation’s multiple challenges toward a brighter future for all.
