Tell MAMA records 1,031 incidents in first six months of 2026, surpassing the entire 2023 total

Anti-Muslim hate in London has continued to rise, with 1,031 cases reported in the first six months of 2026 alone, according to data from Tell MAMA, an organisation that monitors anti-Muslim hate, Islamophobia and online abuse.

The figure has already surpassed the 1,028 cases recorded across the whole of 2023, raising concerns over what the organisation described as a sustained high level of anti-Muslim hatred in the UK capital.

Tell MAMA’s figures show a steady increase in reported cases over recent years. There were 313 cases in 2021, rising to 818 in 2022 and 1,028 in 2023. The number then increased to 1,819 in 2024 and reached a record 1,909 cases in 2025.

The organisation said the number of reports in London has grown more than sixfold since 2021. It added that reports remained at historically high levels throughout 2025, while the first half of 2026 had already exceeded the total recorded in 2023.

Westminster was identified as one of the major hotspots, with Tell MAMA pointing to a series of serious incidents affecting Muslim communities across London in recent months.

The organisation also highlighted a growing pattern of street-based aggression, xenophobic language and attacks targeting Islamic institutions and centres. Among the incidents mentioned was a foiled terror plot involving a teenager who allegedly targeted mosques in south London.

Muslim worshippers have also faced intimidation and harassment in public spaces. On August 15, a Muslim woman wearing a hijab was attacked near a bus stop in Edmonton, north London. Viral footage showed a man punching the woman before another woman intervened. Police later arrived and detained the attacker.

In another incident in June, UK police arrested 12 people over an alleged plot targeting an Islamic gathering. The suspects, aged between 27 and 82, included one woman.

The rise in reported incidents comes amid wider concerns about attitudes towards Muslims in Britain. A recent study by British Future found that more than 56 per cent of Muslims surveyed had experienced what they described as prejudice based on their religion over the previous year.

Tell MAMA said the latest figures highlight the continued challenges faced by Muslim communities in London and the need to address anti-Muslim hatred and intimidation.
